In 1995, after leaving "Group W Media" (cable TV) my father Norman Miller created
"Miller & Associates, Inc." a video production (consultant) company targeted towards
documentary production and local television programming per city. The goal was to
create a new medium for local corporations looking for an alternative to printed
marketing materials. As Miller & Associates grew in client support I, Douglas Brian Miller
(the son) graduated from college with a degree in Graphic Arts & Communications.
As 1995 came to an end the "dot-com" era was just about to blossom, I landed my
first gig as an Art Director for a local California ISP and quickly moved up and all
around the "dot-com" community. My travels in my corporate career have taken
me through NBC, Columbia Tri-Star, Idealab, GoTo.com, LFP Inc., Match.com,
Wedding Channel.com, Monster.com and now in addition to MSI, I am also the
acting Interactive Creative Director for J. Walter Thompson Los Angeles (JWT),
one of the largest ad agencies in the world.
I became a master in corporate graphic design and in most cases mixed my
passion for photography with my projects. It wasn't long before I was the
"multimedia person" as well as the Acting Art Director or Creative Director on
the job. You see... start-ups have a very different business work atmosphere.
You end up (and in some cases are required to be) doing the job of 3-4 people,
without the extra pay. Stock options, stock options, stock options, that's the ticket...
The reason for wearing three other hats, right? Well, yes if your company actually
does go public and your strike price is almost unheard of. But after all was said
and done, the most I walked away with (besides the extra cash) was an awesome,
diverse skill set and a great network of professional peers to interact with. When
I look back, that's what makes me smile. In a way it prepared me for this venture...
msiarts.
In 2001 my long-time friends Mark Shapiro, Paul Ray II and I agreed to work
part-time on various video projects due to my father's failing health
(cancer-lymphoma B). On April 14th 2008 my father passed away and left a legacy
to be continued in his vision. My father was a great man who inspiried me to
become who I am today. I miss him every day, but as he would say;
"keep kicking ass Doug - life must go forward!".
This is what we love to do, create. We cannot imagine a world without creativity!
